I’ve Got the Blues

My daughter has a small obsession with her pacifiers, her “Blues” as she calls them. I created a rule quite a while ago that she is only allowed to use them while in her crib and in her car seat. In her crib she sleeps with 6 of them. All of them have names and are equally important to her. So much so that she will suck on one for a few minutes, then switch to another as if to not let any of them get jealous. This goes on until she falls asleep.

When she is actually asleep, she has one in her mouth and a few in her hands. If she stirs and realizes she is not touching one, she will find one and lay her hand on it. Her little pals.

I am not sure when the appropriate time to transition her off the pacifier. I guess there is not much to be worried about because she doesn’t do it in public, but I know at some point it will be past an appropriate age for her to continue to use them.

I guess I should feel lucky she is not sucking her thumb though. I was a thumb-sucker for a very, very long time. My parents tried everything short of cutting them off, but in the end it attached to me so it always found it’s way to my mouth…much like food does these days.

Speaking of food, it is peach season! Beautiful, run-down-your-chin juicy peaches are so versatile. This summer I have tried something I have never done with them before and I have to say, I was quite pleased.
We recently purchased some pork chops and peaches at the farmers market. Pork does really well with a sweet glaze, so I had no choice but to try throwing together a peach glaze.

Grilled Pork Chops with Peach Glaze

serves 4

1/2 c water

1/2 sugar

3 large peaches, peeled and chopped

1/4 c brown sugar

2 tsp cinnamon

Make a simple syrup by combining water and white sugar in a medium pot over high heat. Bring to a boil and stir until sugar is dissolved. Add peaches, brown sugar, and cinnamon and stir. Simmer mixture for about 15 minutes until thick. Remove from heat and separate it by pouring it into two bowls. One for grilling, and one for serving.

Preheat grill. Season pork chops with salt and pepper. Place on grill on direct heat over medium high. Grill for 3-4 minutes without turning and brush on glaze. Turn pork chops over and grill for an additional 2-4 minutes. Brush glaze on this side during the last minute.

Remove from heat and plate pork chops by spooning serving glaze over each chop.

Hi Erin…like your daughter, my daughter still has her “sassy” and she gets them at nap time and bed time and every now and then when I need her to calm down. She was at the doctor on Monday and I asked about it. She said that it’s a phase and she’ll grow out of it. She has some need to sooth herself and the pacifier is doing that for her. She’s 2 1/2 now. My goal is to have it gone by her 3rd Birthday. So I wouldn’t worry too much about it! If you still are, talk to her pediatrician. Welcome back to Cincinnati!!!

I too was a thumb-sucker. My mom put a band-aid on my finger and made a chart to hang on my bedroom door. Every night I didn’t suck my thumb, I got a star. After so many stars I was officially weened and got to pick any toy in the world (read KMart) I wanted. I chose an ironing board…if I only knew then what I know now…

    good luck with Quinn!
